Joshua's Law Course

By ToddDickerson

Joshua’s Law came into effect on January 1, 2007. It marked the end of a long battle to change Georgia’s driving laws to require younger/new drivers to undergo proper training before being allowed on Georgia’s roads, and to combat years of teen road carnage. In 1995 nearly 5000 young people died in road accidents in the United States. Hundreds of these deaths occurred in the state of Georgia. Initiated by parents who felt the law should be changed after the tragic loss of their son, they rapidly gained the support of the community.

Joshua’s Law changed the minimum requirements that teen drivers must meet to be eligible for a class D driver’s license.

To get your license at age 16 you need to:

  • Complete driver education course that was approved by the DDS and
  • Drive 40 hours under supervision, 6 hours of which need to be at night.

If you do not choose to meet the requirements you must wait until age 17 to get your license!
